Stylesite posted a timeline of the Grunge theme from 1981 to modern day.

The grunge style creates a tomboy image with messy hair and makeup topped off with plaid shirts, distressed jeans and muted colors.

Inspiration for this trend stems from 90s girl bands such as Bikini Kill, L7 and Courtney Love of Hole as well as 90s it girls Kate Moss, Winona Ryder and Drew Barrymore.
