Today I met with Krista Smith, the west coast editor of Vanity Fair. Krista started her career as a fact checker for magazines and then moved on to work for photo shoots and write columns for Vanity Fair.
The production of a magazine starts off by determining what/who the next big thing is in order to determine who will be the face of the magazine or on the spread. Next, the magazine must clear permission to take the photo shoot with the management of the person they are shooting. Afterwards the style of the photo shoot is established and so is the fan base in order to determine whether the story should be online or in the magazine. Finally, a journalist is assigned the story or, in other cases, a journalist might pitch a story idea.
Krista is very interested in the change of communication and makes sure that she and her team are capable of adapting to the times. Vanity Fair will soon be starting their own Youtube channel and continue to run a Twitter account.
Krista's favorite part of her job is the first step of the production - tracking performances and determining what the next big thing will be.
