Yesterday I met with Kelly Johnson, the assistant stylist to Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn. Kelly's company has styled celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, No Doubt, Rachel McAdams, Ciara, Rihanna, Solange and Lily Collins. The team styles celebrities for both events and musical performances.
For an event, a celebrity may call and say that she needs an outfit. Then, the stylists must go to showrooms or use department store studio services to select the outfit based on the type of event. In the case of a performance conditions such as lighting, theme and the number of dancers must be taken into consideration.
Stylists determine fashion trends by observing runway shows and looking at upcoming styles for designers while taking in consideration colors and silhouettes.
According to Kelly the 2013 summer trends include neon, black and white, monochromatic coloring, chain details, punk and 90s style (as seen in Yves Saint Laurent show where plaid baby doll dresses were featured -- see below).
Kelly also said that some essential summer pieces are denim cutoffs, pointed toe pumps in nude and white or vibrant colors as seen in Dior's S/S collection, see through bags, statement necklaces, gladiator sandals and fringe detailing.
Jewelry trends include layering rings, rose gold material, brown diamonds, and vintage shaped rings. For the Oscars many stars, including J.Lo, layered vintage rings.
Kelly started her career by studying at FIDM in San Francisco and then searched for internships. Kelly was very enthusiastic about her job and loves the challenge of costuming performances. However, she also enjoys styling glamorous red carpet events where she can dress up clients like Barbies.
